Illegal debt collection practices come in many different forms. Some examples include:

Debt collectors cannot harass you by:

  • Threatening you
  • Using obscene or profane language
  • Repeatedly calling you

Debt collectors cannot lie to you by:

  • Telling you that you owe a different amount than what you actually owe
  • Pretending to be an attorney or from the government
  • Telling you that you will be arrested
  • Claiming that they will take legal action against you if it’s not true

Debt collectors cannot treat you unfairly by:

  • Trying to collet interest, fees or other charges on the amount you owe unless the original contract or law says they can
  • Depositing a post-dated check early
  • Publicly revealing your debts
