Marks Law Firm was established in 1938 when Joseph Z. Marks (left) opened his first office. His son, Joseph L. Marks, graduated from law school in 1969 and joined the firm after returning from Vietnam. His brother, Ted E. Marks, joined the firm in 1977.
Sam Z. Marks carried on the family tradition, taking the helm of Marks Law Firm in 2000.
Originally located in Des Moines, Marks Law Firm moved to Urbandale in 1978 and then returned to Des Moines in 2004 to establish its current location in a home office at 4225 University Avenue.

Sam Marks
Sam was inspired to pursue law after watching his father, uncle, and grandfather, practice before him. Marks Law Firm is a family business, with three generations of experience behind it. Sam has lived in Des Moines his whole life, receiving his J.D. from Drake University in 1999. Sam is dedicated to the Des Moines community and makes a point to hire Drake University undergraduates as law clerks and Drake Law School graduates as associate attorneys.
Sam firmly believes that the value of an attorney is measured by their ability to obtain results for their clients and we are proud that our office gets those results while remaining inviting, friendly, and supportive.
In addition to running Marks Law Firm, Sam is also frequently asked to provide lectures to attorneys, business professionals and the public on the topics of bankruptcy and consumer protection and how these issues affect other aspects of the law. He has also received several awards and is proud to be a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the National Association of Consumer Advocates. Both organizations, along with many others that Sam is a part of help to provide additional resources that benefit our clients.
